Educated at the University of Washington, the University of Michigan and Vienna University of Technology, Heman has been a licensed architect for over 20 years and is registered in both Ontario and Hong Kong. He is known to be always striving for design excellency, sustainability, space efficiency, cost-effectiveness, technical functionality and great detailing in all his projects.
Prior to founding Heman Shih Architect Inc. Heman has worked in senior positions in some of Canada’s and Hong Kong’s best design firms like Perkin Eastman, WZMH and Aedas Group on award-winning projects such as Trillium Health Centre West Wing Addition in Mississauga and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Temple Complex in Hong Kong. Both of these projects employ high performance building envelopes albeit completely different architectural styles – modern and classical. Heman proves his versatility in handling different architectural styles in different climate, building practices, construction methods and cultural differences.
Heman’s extensive professional experience covers a diverse range of commercial, residential, hospitality, government, institutional, health care, industrial, entertainment, gaming, religious, restaurant, and retail projects. With a solid hands-on experience in both design and construction detailing and administration, he is particularly adept at complex multi-disciplinary coordination to deliver projects on time and budget while maintaining original design intentions.
Heman – a LEED Accredited Professional, a Member of the Canada Green Building Council and a student of the world renowned sustainable Architect-Professor Dr Soontorn Boonyatikarm – is an avid advocate for sustainable and integrative design in his practice.
Heman has been a guest on a Toronto Radio Show to discuss green living, workshop speaker and educator at various green home shows and technical advisor to Toronto Chinese for Ecological Living (TCEL) – an environmentalist community group. He also served as overseas technical advisor for the award winning Consultancy Study for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Buildings Department “A response to the Quest for Sustainable Urban Living Space under The First Sustainable Development Strategy for Hong Kong.”
Always a keen continuous learner, Heman had won a scholarship from the German Government and Toronto Goethe Institute to further his studies on modern architecture and German language in and around Berlin. He has also travelled extensively throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.
